Istanbul is getting a new airport, one of several grandiose projects of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In a mad rush to complete the project in time, health and safety regulations have been shunted aside. And as a result, 37 workers have died and many more have been injured over the last four years.
The construction workers have had enough, and went on strike last month for a couple of days.
The reaction of the Turkish state was swift and brutal: some 600 workers were arrested and 35 of them remain in prison. Among them is Ozgur Karabulut, the president of a construction workers’ union. Hundreds of workers have lost their jobs.
They are asking for all of us to send messages of protest to the government, demanding the release of the jailed unionists.
